This giveaway is now closed!

Here at Gussy has a lot to say {and sew} we love to look at all things beautiful. Beautiful items to remind us of those we love, beautiful stories about finding joy and inner creativity…

Today is week #26 of my series on Featured Artists, which is a bi-monthly event showcasing fun and sassy handmade shops! I love searching for new wares to show the Gussy community. You can read all back Featured Artist posts by clicking here.

Please help me to welcome Kacia at Coconut Robot…

***

How did you come up with your shop name?

Back when cupid was just starting to shoot arrows at my Ho and I, close friends of ours did their best at getting us together. One evening when I was watching my favorite girls, Maddie and Claire, Rachel-their mom-suggested Andy come by. Upon hearing this, Maddie declared: ”what!? the Coconut Robot man!?!? YES!!!” After yelling her excitement, she jumped down from her chair to do the new, Coconut Robot dance. Yes, ladies and gents, there was a dance that accompanied, and it was incredible.

Fast forward… He asks: I say yes! We decided early on that we wanted to make a fun website for our wedding.

As we pondered our wedding website domain, we agreed that we wanted this site to be 1] weird. We wanted it to stand out. 2] timeless. We didn’t want something like “HosmersmarriedInJune.com” 3] ”Andy and” anything just makes for an awkward title. 4] We’ve dreamed and dreamed and dreamed about working together creatively.

We threw around so many names. When Coconut Robot was suggested, I just kept coming back to it. Sure, you might think it’s pretty dumb, but I like it.

Coconut Robot isn’t really logical, but if you really wanted to rationalize why it works here are a few reasons
:

  • Andy builds robots
  • Coconuts and Robots don’t usually go together. And I like things that don’t really seem to go hand in hand
  • Coconuts can be found on beaches…and it’s sunny at the beach…sun bleaches out hair…which means a lot of blondes are at the beach…and I’m blonde. So it just works :]

Share an interesting fact about yourself.

I’ve had my nose broken three times. Ouch! The story? Super embarrassing, but I promise I’ll share it sometime on the blog!

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be?

My mom used to say I am “bubbly.” + I think that the word still holds true today! [at least I hope so! :] I just adore people. Love. You. All.]

Do you have a day job or sell on Etsy full-time?

I actually work full-time in a job that takes me all over the United States: I travel typically Monday through Thursday, every week. It’s hard to be away from my husband so much, but it has taught me to really appreciate the time I am home with him! [+ my pup, of course!] Traveling every week means that I have to work hard balancing my Coconut Robot order load: my weekends are filled with filling orders, doing laundry, seeing friends, + hanging out with my man!

And if you have any questions about hospital patient flow: go ahead and give me a ring. ;] That’s my day-job.

Read any good books lately?

Yes! I picked up the “Girl who played with Fire” on a whim: + I can’t put it down!! I’m reading them a bit backwards – I’ll be reading the first book, “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” after the second book: oops!

Share a little bit about yourself.

I’m a natural blonde from the midwest. I love to sing. I love to meet new people. I love the sun. + I love Jesus. I went to a small private college in the middle of the cornfields of Indiana. + I moved to Pittsburgh, PA on a whim… + Now I’m married to the love of my life. I love to dream. I love to think of crazy new design: most of which are probably a bit impossible! But I keep on dreaming anyways!

List a few of your most favorite pastimes.

I love going on long runs in the evening. I love curling up with a book + a cup of coffee. I love learning new things. + I love snuggling with my husband and watching a movie….although I usually end up falling asleep!

What are you listening to right now?

Andrew Belle: ah-mazing. + Glee, when I feel like busting out Showchoir moves :]

Name something unique to where you live.

Right now, I live in Pittsburgh, PA – but I’m originally from Wisconsin. Pittsburghers do some interesting things:

  • They leave out “to be” – “My hair needs cut.” “My grass needs cut.” [drives me crazy!]
  • They do the “Pittsburgh Left” – which means the left turn who should yield…thinks they have the right-of-way…it’s interesting!

Share with us a favorite Etsy purchase or shop.

Lately, I have become obsessed with Asher Jasper’s etsy shop. I cannot get OVER how adorable her little wool rattles + toys are. A-dorable!!!

Name one place you must visit in your lifetime and why.

Norway. I want to see my homeland. I don’t look Norwegian at all… ;]

What inspires you?

Dreamers. I love meeting + reading stories of people who dreamed, + they made those dreams become reality. What can be more inspiring than that?!?

Your blog is really nice, love the colours you chose.

Something positive! I threw my back out, so I can barely walk. Even though that probably means I’m having a bad day, I’m not. My toddler got shipped off to Grandma’s since I can’t lift or chase him, so I’m alone with my infant daughter. Mommy-daughter time is awesome! Plus, I looked in the fridge and there was a piece of tres leches cake left over from the holiday. Score!

I’m feeling like a tired lady. But sunshine & fresh air are good companions to keep around.

We came home and I made “the best dinner ever”. Max specifically announced, “it’s so great you’re launching new meals to the world”. LOL— kids! 🤣👏🏻💓
How about a little Wednesday night introduction? 😘Social media sure has changed over the years and we don’t always SEE who we’re following or remember WHY we’re following certain accounts.

So, hello! As you can gather, my name is Maggie ;)

I started writing online (almost 13 years ago) to share the handmade products I was sewing. My shop was called Gussy Sews. ✂️👛I love the community that has grown from sewing & sharing online.

Let’s FFW to today: Zack and I live in Michigan and have four young children (2 boys & 2 girls). I slowly left the handmade industry and walked right into homemaking, homeschooling, and encouraging women through writing. 💕📝

Motherhood has been very hard on me. (And not just because of how close in age our four children are.) It’s been hard for me because I fought for years to accept that *it’s supposed to be hard*.

I mean, how do you effectively teach another person to know and love the Lord? Bc that’s how I think of motherhood: a calling to nurture others by studying the One who nurtures me. So I gotta make the first move: study the Bible and seek Him first. As my friend Autumn reminded me, vulnerability births transformation.

(I’ve had to be really vulnerable!)

So, yes motherhood has fully transformed me. But even more so, Christ has fully transformed me. My list of “all that He’s done for me” is off to a beautifully long start.

Something else I want you to know about me: I stalled for years before acknowledging I have anxiety and depression. It’s hard to talk about this because of course this isn’t forever “my hardship”, but rather because acknowledging this means to heal I have to work through some really difficult things. ✨

But my friend Jesus walks alongside me. He’s already done a mighty work in my heart, including helping me process my anger in healthier ways. I’ve also adopted a heart for sisterhood, mothering, and Titus 2 mentorship.

Sometimes our greatest losses are our greatest gains? That’s what I’m clinging to!

How about you? Tell me something about yourself so I can get to know you on a deeper heart level. 🖤🖤
How do you play in the winter? // We had a really How do you play in the winter? // We had a really great time visiting family in northern Michigan. On my blog I share a few ways we played outside, plus I describe a memorable childhood game ❄️☃️. Did you play it as a kiddo?
We had gotten a bit lazy with our rhythms: screens We had gotten a bit lazy with our rhythms: screens in the morning (HGTV), playtime before lessons, and not enough quiet time after lunch. This made for a really, ummm, unenjoyable learning experience.

But today! Today we reset the rhythm, and we have had a much happier home & time learning together. 👏🏻
