{CELEBRATING two years of Gussy Sews-ness, yeow!}

May 17, 2012 ·
Filed Under: blog/craft events, giveaway, Gussy

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is comment #120, Denise — YAY Denise! Please check your email :)

Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating one year of indie biz, and now two years have gone by? Amazing.

Really, this is a celebration of YOU! Because YOU support Gussy Sews we have something to celebrate today. Because YOU share, tweet, email, purchase, share some more, comment, and share once again, we have something to celebrate.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Oh, it means so much :)

HOW DID GUSSY SEWS START? Zack and I were married almost four years ago, and just a couple months later I found myself on Etsy’s website. It didn’t take long for me to find myself wishing I knew how to sew like all the other Etsy sellers I had found, and honestly that was sole my motivation for learning how to sew. I had never taken a sewing class prior so I relied heavily on the Public Library and YouTube videos for instruction. It only took a few months, but many fat quarters and late-nights. I started with zipped pouches because those seemed the simplest to learn, but also something I was interested in. When starting something new, I’ve always found it’s easier to learn it when you are genuinely intrigued. While learning how to sew I was also learning how to blog…  And now that almost four years have passed I STILL feel like I’m learning something about blogging + sewing. I love learning and so it’s been a wonderful adventure :)

When I started sewing I was accepting custom orders ~ because of this I learned how to make a variety of items I wouldn’t have normally learned how to make. Since I’m self-taught at all of it — sewing, pattern-making, pairing fabrics, perfecting our signature ruffle, I had a lot to learn. But accepting custom orders did more than just broaden my inventory, it gave me a foundation of how I wanted to run my business long-term, in terms of product and behind-the-scenes. These unique orders also gave me fresh content to share on my blog, and they helped me to form an online community early-on ~ which includes friendships I still have today :) A constant mix of learning something new and then practicing applying it long-term is what helped my business to grow. It is almost like a snow-ball effect, the longer I did it the easier it was for Zack + I to see it was growing into something tangible + trustworthy.

After about 18 months passed {since first learning how to sew} and I had attended my first blog conference {Blissdom}, Zack + I started working towards the possibility of me leaving my day job to pursue Gussy Sews full-time. About three months later we had succeeded in saving three months of my salary as an emergency fund, and May 17, 2010 was my first say working full-time on my business exclusively.

And ever since we first celebrated this huge milestone we have both learned so much about working from home + indie biz life. I think having a constant need to learn has been really key to the growth of Gussy Sews. It’s not just that I want to learn, it’s that I need to learn.

And another thing — we don’t measure growth purely by the number of sales we’ve had or the number of states/countries we’ve shipped to, but more so what type of progress are we making in terms of encouraging others to follow their dreams, too.

It’s been a truly lovely adventure…

 * * *

To celebrate these last two years of Gussy Sews-ness I’ve put together a super fun + inspiring gift package that ONE READER will win, including some of my favorite things —

We have been encouraged lately through seeing God put us in a HIGHLY stressful situation (short story: my husband graduates medical school tomorrow, moves in a month to start residency, my 18-month old and I live alone for 2 weeks, move by ourselves to be with hubs. . .and then I have our 2nd baby a week and a half later) but being so, so faithful to us. He’s lined up a house for us to rent, people to help take care of us in a new and difficult situation, and I KNOW He is doing so much behind the scenes that I can’t see now. I am encouraged every day by how he keeps my level of stress down when it should be through the roof.

I have been encouraged very recently to do some type of different work. I just didn’t know what. I have always liked to create, and I was blessed with the opportunity to attend a weekend of crafting with some wonderful women whom I had never even met before. They taught me how to SEW. The abundance of inspiration I have had since I got back from that weekend has been overwhelming. I have had ideas I never had. I tried a sewing project I had never thought of, on my own, and succeeded in it. And now, God is putting all these fantastic sewing blogs in my path, which I never knew existed. I wonder what He has in store for me. I can’t wait to find out.
    How’s that for encouraging?

Maggie, congratulations!!! This encouraged me yesterday…
My friend’s 2 year old said, “Miss Kristin, do you have people?” Her sister translated saying she meant to ask if I have children. “No, I don’t.” A few minutes later to her mom she said, “I want to go home with Miss Kristin so she can have a kid.” What learned? Simple faith/innocence/logic.

Since my husband graduated Seminary in December I have been SO eager to leave Texas, he then took a Clinical Pastoral Education Class at the Local hospital…the 1st few months he was in the program I got so discouraged that he kept hearing NO from every hospital and VA he applied to…now that it is down to decision time on do we pack up and simply go and then look for a job or stay and hopes that the hospital he is already at will hire him? I am strangely at peace…as much as I would love to leave my current job for something new and exciting, I am at total peace at what He has for us…this has been the most inspiring feeling I have had in a long time.

In January, I signed up for a handful of sewing classes through a local fabric shop. although i don’t plan to make a business of it, it has been so much fun to learn to sew. i’ve made a few small things for friends/family as gifts and everyone is really enjoying their handmade stuff :)

Hi Gussy – your blog is fabulous and your sewn creations are amazing – so happy and unique. When I learned how to sew, I did take a sewing class but the lady who taught it was such a perfectionist that I almost gave up before I started! Anyway, after that class, I started doing things my own way – visually teaching myself. I started out making mostly skirts and real simple clothes. Now, I like making accessories and handbags (not to sell, just for fun). I also like coming up with my own patterns and things – I absolutely DESPISE cutting out pattern pieces and reading directions – such a HUGE waste of time LOL! THanks again for your sweet encouragement – I hope your business continues to explode with rich goodness! Have a FABULOUS day! Heidi

God’s word is always inspiring and encouraging to me, and this verse from Jeremiah 1 (verses 4-7) has spoken especially to me lately:

4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
    before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. ”
6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”
7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

I teach high school, and I always want my students to know that just because they are young doesn’t mean that they cannot make a huge difference in their community and the world.

Hubby and I celebrated our first anniversary after re-marrying (married before, divorced, then reconciled), my car died but we still have Hubby’s that we can share, Hubby lost his job and made a career switch, we lost our house but are blessed to be able to stay with family till we get on our feet, we had our daughter right in the middle of all of that chaos but were fortunate to be able to have a vbac rather than another c-section, and with the need to be more frugal I have discovered I am a really talented craftswoman! Things went wrong but we are all ok and things will get better!

Every day I am encouraged by the strength of my friends, family, and faith. They are what keeps me going. I’m lucky to have an excellent support network that keeps me reminded of who I am. When my best friend and I decided to start our own shop (Crafty Girl Squared [etsy.com/shop/craftygirlsquared]) we knew it would be great because we are so great together and our styles are just enough alike that we compliment each other and just enough different that we make really cool things.

Hi Gussy! I found such encouragement in reading your blog about your trip to Africa! What a leap of faith your life has been and it gives me hope that there are still compassionate and loving people in this world. Also to see how happy they are in Africa with sooo little. I have to remind myself of that each day!

Thanks for sharing your talent and your life with us! When I received my first Gussy Sews tote I HUGGED it…it was so soft and smelled good and handmade! Love you!

We went to a funeral last weekend, for a man my husband worked with. I had never met him, but I left feeling challenged in so many ways. This man had 7 children all of whom got up to speak about their father and the impact he had on their lives. If my kids have half the nice things to say about me when I pass, I’ll feel very blessed!
I was reminded to live in the present, to always BE there with my family. To walk out my faith. To live a life completely devoted to Christ. To make sure that He gets all the Glory.

Here’s some encouragement for you… you inspired me to learn how to sew! I’ve owned a sewing machine (given to me by my mom) for 5 years but it sat in a closet untouched. I thought it would be fun to learn but I had no idea where to start and was overwhelmed by the thought, so I just avoided it. But after reading your blog for quite some time and seeing all of the amazing things you were making and how you just went for it, I decided to follow in your footsteps. I got a bunch of books from the library (loved your suggestion of Bend the Rules Sewing… by far the most helpful) and watched tons of youtube videos. I studied for at least a month before I sewed my first stitches. I was so nervous! That was in February. It’s been about 3 months now and I’m making clothes for my two little girls and loving every minute of it. I can’t wait to learn more, but for now skirts and dresses and baby headbands are fine projects for me. (I have yet to tackle anything like zippers… wowza. i’m impressed that you started with that!)
Thank you for sharing your love of sewing with others. Also, I think I cried at every single one of your Compassion posts. We’ve sponsored a child for quite some time now but I admit I’m not the best at keeping up correspondence with her. Your posts reminded me that there is a face and a name behind the money that gets automatically deducted from our account each month. I’m motivated to get in touch with her asap! You are doing great things!

Starting my own crochet business! I was in the hospital with twins enduring pre-term labor on full bed rest. I am not much of a sitter, so my mother-in-law brough over some yarn, crochet hooks, and some books on how to crochet. I first started out crocheting what I thought was a real stitch when it turns out it was just a slip stitch and I didn’t get very far! But luckily there was a lady that would walk around the floor volunteering her time to do crafts once a week for us that were stuck in the hospital on bed rest. She was a life saver! She sat down and taught me some stitches and how to work in the round and helped me make my very first blanket and hat. I now am a very experienced crocheter, but with 3 children I just don’t have a lot of time to put into my business. I make things and sell them via facebook and etsy in my shop called Samantha Lilly Sweethearts. I can’t imagine my life without crocheting and it feels so freeing to make 90% of the gifts we give and to be able to make quality items for my children.

It didn’t matter if we had a million dollars as long as we were together, we would be OK. After getting laid off last April, it really hit home that million dollars was even farther away. I took the initiative to start my own business out of my home called ASB Designs, LLC – Custom Jewelry Designs. My first month I made enough money to make our mortgage payment. I am constantly looking of new was to do things and learn as much as I can. Recently, I took up sewing as a way to extend my services in my home and make it a little more presentable. I found so many fun prints that I forgot that I had purchased (or had more leftover than I riginally thought) and made an inspiring list of projects to work on to use up what I currently have before purchasing more. Even though it’s been sitting in there forever, it almost feels like new since it’s been so long since I have organized it. It lights up the whole room and reminds me that no matter what the world brings our way there is always hope- and mine just happens to be in the form of an incredible 5 month old child. He reminds me everyday how truly blessed we are.

    Yay! Congrats, friend!! :)

Something encouraging that happened to me recently :: I just gave birth to our second child, a boy, on April 11. Being a blogger myself and a web/blog designer, I decided to take a break for the month of April to focus on recovering and spending time with my new little. :) I was anxious, though, that my still new web design business would take a hit with this break. Since starting January 1 of this year, I have had a continuous stream of projects. I was afraid that my “leave” would cause me to lose that exciting momentum. I prayed and prayed and gave it to the Lord. About a month after my son was born, I decided to put out on Twitter and Facebook that I was opening up my design calendar again. I thought this wouldn’t really result in anything, but the Lord confirmed that my business was still what He wanted for me when I got an email requesting design services the NEXT day!! :)

If we continue to give our businesses and blogs and really our whole LIVES to the Lord and trust that He is in control, we can sit back and watch as He moves and directs our lives! YAY! :)

My heart has been so encouraged lately resting in the knowledge that if I am putting my faith and my family above all else, the rest will fall into place the way it should for ME. ME is key because what is best for me is not going to look like what is best for someone else. It does no good to compare myself to another unless I can find my cookie cutter duplicate leading a parallel life somewhere out there. We are all different, which means even as handmade business owners, our job description, our workplace, our work hours, etc. are all going to be DIFFERENT. Once we embrace that and turn to Him first and foremost, our hearts will be content and He will make them runneth over!

One of my 6th graders was giving the ‘grand tour’ to some 5th graders that will be here next year. I heard my 6th grader say, “This is Mrs. Windsor’s room. She is the strictest teacher ever, but she is the nicest and funniest teacher too. You’ll love her!” Be still my heart. I’ve done it~ the perfect combo of ‘don’t mess with me’ and ‘ I love you each dearly and I hope you know it’ ! My job here is done~ only 9.5 days left. But I’m not counting. *wink

Not everyone can do everything for everyone…but we all can use our talents, resources, time, or money to help someone in need! It doesn’t have to cost a lot in fact sometimes it can just be baking some cookies and taking it to your widow neighbor or donating your time at the local food bank, or sewing totes for women who serve others everyday at your local church! Helping a friend by watching her kiddos, or taking meals to those who need it. We can all serve others in some way if we just take the time to look around. We all can make a difference!

Something encouraging to me…… It would have to be my 5 year old daughter. She has this determination, love, and dedication towards reading. She had pretty much started teaching herself to read and putting words together during winter. She did whatever she could to read a few smaller books a day and now she is reading outstandingly. As I see all the dedication, love, and determination she put into getting to read the way she does now, I realize that I need to put that same exact effort into my own business. I have struggled with a few set backs here lately and have wanted to just throw in the towel. However, I keep thinking of how much work she put into reading and I keep telling myself , If a 5 year old can put all this effort in and prevail then so can I.

I’m going to share an “old” encouraging thing. When we were in high school, my (now) husband had this realization that when you look at things in light of eternity, most of our huge problems seem tiny. He encouraged me in that through the stress of school and still does on occasion when I get overwhelmed. Look at things in the light of eternity. Very little is as important as we think it is compared to eternity with Jesus.

My favorite inspirational piece is to remember to take things one day at a time. Goals are not reached overnight. When you feel like you’ve reached your end with your diet, exercise, school work, business plan, whatever it may be, just ask yourself, can you make it through today, just today? Of course you can.

I have always loved this quote from the Dalai Lama XIV:
“Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all human beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.”

Something encouraging!: Taking on my NIKON D3000 & Photoshop CS5! I’m a stay at home mom & have always had a huge passion for photography. Financially, I can’t afford to go back to school or take classes, so I’ve been learning these complex elements of photography, Photoshop & about my camera all by myself! It isn’t an easy task with a 22 month old & “mom-brain!”, but each time I put an element I learn to use, I see amazing results in my photography!

This weekend I am helping out my church at a single moms retreat in Alexandria, MN. This retreat first started out as maybe 50 single moms but has turned into 250+ moms. It is so encouraging Becuase we have gotten so many items donated for these women and on top of that they get FREE car care at our church and up at the retreat! I feel so blessed to be apart of something like this and would ask anyone who reads this to pray for these women who are coming here!

I hope this is not long…but it might be..sorry… This week has been a tremendous week for my very good friend.. Her husband died of cancer (brain tumor) on Sunday night. Even though I have been there for her…I feel like she has given me so much more now. She truly is an inspiration..they way she took charge and was a mom (to her 11 year old son), wife, worked full-time job, and caretaker of her husband. The past year he was getting worse and worse…but she kept her head up and was fighting with her husband till the end. The love they shared is amazing.. Watching and grieving with her…has brought a whole new outlook on life to me.. Be very thankful for the family you do have and treasure all the moments you have with them…life is too short…she is truly an inspiration… I am thankful that he is not in pain anymore and he is with his Lord and Savior. I pray for peace and strength for her and her son..

Hi! I feel like if we lived in the same town we’d be great friends. :) After coming home from college 3 years ago, I was in a pretty lonely place. All of my friends were still at college, so I really had no friends at home. I clung so closely to the Lord and His Word, which was my lifeline, but still prayed so fervently for one true friend. My mom said one thing that really stuck with me, “Sometimes God puts us in places where we’re not meant to be happy, we’re here to encourage others. And by being an encouragement to others, we find joy in Him.” “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13

So excited for you! Your blog has been inspiring to me–to make time to be creative and to stop out in faith and do things that are scary if God is in them :). Congratulations on 2 years!!

A quote that always motivates me is “Its never too late in fiction or in life, to revise”. This always reminds me that I can fix what isn’t working. That I can always start fresh and make changes.

A friend flew all the way from Minnesota to San Diego to help me launch my new business this weekend! I learned so much from her and feel blessed to have such a positive mentor.

Loving this quote by Elizabeth Elliott as we’ve just had our 4th child via adoption. Thankful for this beautiful and crazy life of pointing my kids to the Cross!
“I can’t think of another career more challenging and satisfying than to pour my energies into the daily task of making order out of chaos, music out of noise, communication out of babble, purposefulness out of purposelessness, pointing chubby little wayward feet gently toward the Path, lighting ignorance with knowledge and confusion with understanding.”
