{what i wore wednesday}

March 28, 2012 · 37 Comments

yeow! i’m here with another what i wore wednesday post, linking up with my friend lindsey! i know it’s been a few months {ok, THREE!} since my last WIWW post but no one’s counting, right? ;)

i often get asked for tips on what to wear since i work from home full-time. and while i don’t have the same, works-for-everyone answer i do have the *perfect* answer: wear what works best for you and your family.

here’s what i’ve learned: wearing comfy clothes helps me to be super productive in the studio because i don’t have to fuss about my outfit being covered in thread + fabric scraps. when i’m not working in the studio, wearing a more polished outfit helps me to stay focused on blog/biz admin tasks because i feel like i look more professional. for my personality it’s all about encouraging + motivating myself to do my best work. one thing i’ve learned since leaving my day job nearly 2 years ago: wear/do what works best for you!

here’s a little sample of what i wore this past week:

ruffle tank + striped cardigan, forever 21;
skinny jeans, target

striped tank, forever 21; blue shorts, target;
necklace, lisa leonard

nail polish is one of my FAVORITE accessories!
i take time each week to play with these cute, colored bottles.

studio day: purple shirt + mustard tank + gray leggings, target;
yellow flower ring, forever 21

even though i spent the day in the studio i still like to wear my accessories ♥

red striped shirt, kohls; skinny jeans, target;
bead necklace + yellow flower ring, forever 21; gray flip flops, old navy

blue tank + pink striped skirt + gray flip flops, old navy

the main takeaway is this: it’s 100% OK to wear outfits that works best for you on a day-to-day basis, even if that means wearing something different from your peers! if you are more comfortable/productive wearing a comfier outfit then wear that! if you need to wear a more-polished outfit then wear that! if you like to to wear your favorite ring, just to pick up the kids — do that! the goal here is to be more intentional with what you wear day-to-day.

it’s up to you ~ remember, you set the guidelines for what’s appropriate. and in case anyone’s wondering, every day i shower + put on my make-up, no matter what type of outfit i’m wearing. these two things help me to feel my best.

SHARE WITH US: how about you, do you “fully get ready” every day {however that looks for you}? are there certain things you do {or don’t do} to prepare for your day? what’s your day “job” and what little piece of encouragement can you share with us today?

    I love your hair with the bangs pulled back, Maggie! It’s gorgeous. That second photo? Gorgeous.

    I stay at home and homeschool my son and do some sewing. I’ve always been able to hop right out of bed every morning and get ready for the day. It makes me motivated to get going and not lay around. I don’t always get my make up on (I used to never go anywhere without my make-up. I’ve gotten past that now. Maybe old age?), but I do everything in anticipation of the day.

    Very inspiring! And so true! I love when you said “be intentional on what you where everyday” because that is so something I need help with! :) I feel so much better when I FEEL like I am look cute. And when I feel like I am scrubby, I feel scrubby. But even if I am in scrubby clothes and I think it looks cute, then I feel cute! Big difference!

    PS- LOVE your outfits!

    I work in a corporate office and have to wear dress pants and sweaters EVERY DAY. I loath it. My office is freezing all year round no matter how many times the HVAC gentlemen comes out to fix it. I even had a heater under my desk for a while but it DIED from over use :(

    HB and I have talked – at length – about what to do. I don’t have a budget for more work clothes and when I do I’d rather spend it on fun things that I enjoy wearing. So I’m spending more money on basic items that I actually like. Every two weeks I buy 1 thing that costs about $60 and is for work only. My first purchase is next week so I’ll let you know if that’s working for me. I totally miss being excited about getting dressed up every day.

      i think you need to wear a crazy shirt under your sweater so you can giggle about it quietly at your desk that you’re breaking the rules ;D can you wear nail polish? fun shoes? ack, how can we make this easier for you???

        Nail polish is certainly a start. Followed by a cute haircut (it’s getting the chop this summer!). Oh and cross your fingers that this summer the business casual attire will be unnecessary – but for all the right reasons :D

    I got dressed for the office on Monday, and then ended up working from home. I can connect with what you said – when I was all polished looking, I did feel more productive!

    I work in a very casual office where jeans and t-shirts are acceptable (because even us office workers are needed to do warehouse work on occaison where we can get dirty and we do not deal customers often), however I try to wear nicer jeans with a nice, but not too dressy top and cute flats at least 3 times a week. I have a shorter hairstyle that requires me to style it daily, and I wear basic make-up (mineral foundation, blush, mascara- sometimes with a nude eyeshadow and eyeliner). I often thank my lucky stars that casual wear is accepable because there are mornings I do NOT have the energy to get “fully” ready, especially when my 7 month old is cranky. Today I’m wearing jeans, a brown button up, a blue scarf, and Aldo flats. Casual and comfortable! One thing that makes me feel more put together each morning are earrings! Even if it’s my simple diamond studs. Find one thing that makes you happy (earrings, a ring, necklace, headband, pair of shoes, heck even a cute pair of underwear or bra!) and wear it everyday. It makes such a difference!

    As a SAHM, many of my co-SAHMs wear shorts/t-shirts/sweats/yoga pants. That does not work for me. I did that when I was heavier and then (through Sarah Mae’s blog) I started to get dressed every day. I feel so much better (not that weight loss didn’t help either)! I still wear yoga pants and t-shirts but it’s rare and usually at night after a shower. Today? I’m wearing a simple cotton dress from Target & a necklace I made. I feel pretty – for me. I get asked by this one lady why I dress up (all the time): because it makes me feel good.

    I have no problem getting dressed, but for me, it’s the hair. I do my hair during the week for work, but the instant I set foot at home and go into ‘relax mode’ the hair goes up in a pony. For me, the hair is almost a formality. Down and curled = professional, getting work done. Up and out of my face = relax, have fun.

    Cute outfits by the way. So glad it’s warming up so everyone else is breaking out the fun colors so I don’t stick out like a sore thumb wearing yellow in December.

    I’m a new follower…. I just wanted to say that I LOVE your style… I felt like I was looking at lots of my own things :) I also appreciate that you shop at “normal” stores…. Sometimes I like something I see a blogger wearing, but it’s from a ridiculously expensive store (at least for my budget haha)…. But I shop at Target and ON and Kohls, etc… Also- I’m super inspired by your striped red shirt and beaded necklace… I sometimes feel like necklaces like that (that I own) look too busy on patterned shirts… But you rocked it! And I’m feeling inspired to become a nail painter… I normally only do my toes, but your nails look so cute and they really ARE like another accessory! In case you couldn’t tell, I enjoyed this post haha :)

    Your style is so wonderful – you look great!! I’m a stay at home mom/handmade business owner so normally I’m found in jeans a t-shirt, but I try really hard to step out of that and not wear the same type of outfit! You are definitely an inspiration! :)

    I love your “studio day” outfit! that is right up my alley! Also, I recently switched jobs. I was a high school English teacher, and now I stay at home with my daughter. It is really important to me to shower every day and get dressed. My makeup ranges from day to day depending on what I’m doing. But, like you, getting showered and dressed helps me feel my best. Otherwise I feel lazy and yucky all day!
