I had the exact same experience last week! I was on a vacation with my hubby in Solvang, and we went in store that had all these miniatures and doll house kits. I told him all about the dollhouse I had and loved as a kid. I also had a flashback when we went in some thrift shops, because I used to spend my allowance on antique dishes and old, old books. I was such a dork. And still am!
What a fun post! Thank you for sharing your reminiscent moment with us!
When I was little, I loved to read (and still do)! We lived in a 110 year old house, and my room was upstairs along with a small bathroom and another room my parents used as an office. At night, I had the upstairs all to myself. After my mother would tuck me in to bed, I would pretend to sleep for awhile, and then turn on my lamp and get sucked in to Anne of Green Gables or some other wonderful story. Little did I know, my mom would look up the stairs and see a sliver of light from my room reflecting on the wall, so she could tell when I was not sleeping. It took me a long time to understand how she knew to call up the stairs and tell me to stop reading.. Then I discovered book lights, and could read long into the night without her knowing :). Childhood is so fun.
I loved to read, too! I was in a book club and would read all three books at once (they came in the mail). Drive my Dad nuts, but hey… girl needs her books ;]
books books books books books!
I can open my favorite books and find myself transported back to my childhood by a single illustration or passage. They are such treasures to me, and I absolutely love reading them with my own children (or, more often now, watching my kids read them).
What a happy post. :)
You just took me back to my childhood. I played with my mom’s barbies and house. My/her house was a pink box with very mod barbies in their swing dresses and high ponytails picture all around the outside. Man I wish I still had that barbie house. I am headed to ebay now to see if I can find one to look at. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I love your blog mainly for posts like this–these questions are great and I love to see people’s responses!!
No surprise, food always factors in on my memories…birthday cake, ice cream cones, BBQ’s…all definitely bring me back to childhood:)
oh my gosh, you are so funny! :]
I also played with MY mom’s Midge doll! Except my sisters and I cut all her hair off and made her look kind of pathetic. Poor thing. When my sisters would steal my Ken dolls, poor Midge had to be the “dad” because of her haircut.
Now, looking back, I wonder if that was weird.
Oh well.
Gussy is looking great, Maggie!
Keep it up! :)
oh my gosh, i had an awesome doll house with homemade accessories: bathtub, couch, curtains etc. but i don’t think that mine was as fancy as the ones that they have now;{ oh well- it was still fun and way bad a$$;}
I didn’t have many Barbie’s and no fancy house. But I had a lot of books! I loved to read and have so many memories that come from my books. So many trips to the library with my mom and the hours my sister, brother and I would spend playing library at home with our own books. I can’t wait to make an imaginary library for my own girls to play with.
I had exactly one Barbie growing up – it was an Easter/Spring barbie that my grandparents gave me for Christmas when I was 9 or 10. My favorite part was not the Barbie, but the cafe that I also got. I spent lots of time with all of the little food pieces setting it up just right!
Also, books were my thing. My mom always tells me about how she would take away my books and make me go outside and play, because I never would on my own. And I’m still that way. ;D
I have to admit…I was a barbie girl! I had everything barbie…town house, corvette, jeep, motorhome, and the list goes on! Every accessory imaginable…I was the only girl, so my mom spoiled me. She made all of her clothes too…she was an unbelievable seamstress of little items.
I was SUCH a reader! Babysitter’s Club, Sweet Valley High(I know- all the really good literary pieces!), and about anything else I could get my hands onto. I still read cheaper by the dozen and the best Christmas pageant ever because they are just SO funny! :)
