This giveaway is now closed.

This week’s Featured Artist is Mandy from Mandolin Goose, a shop filled with the prettiest, most-colorful spray painted/re-purposed stuff around! Be sure & enter the giveaway below!

Please introduce yourself to us.
My name is Mandy Nevill Goosens and I live in Nashville, TN, with my husband Miles and 4 ridiculous dogs, Ella, Phineas, Banjo, and Posy. My Etsy shop focuses on giving new life to vintage, salvaged, discarded items while still embracing the original character. It’s amazing what a little love and color can do! I also like to think my items can also breathe a little life into the buyer’s space.

What inspires you?
Shape, texture, color, sound… I guess I can find inspiration in just about anything. Oftentimes, the inspiration finds you. You just have to be open to it.

Share something you absolutely LOVE about your shop/your product.
Color! I like to think I have a keen eye for color and color combinations. I love when color can just *POP* and give you a different perspective on things. I’m certainly not the only Etsy seller who ‘paints some old stuff’ but I think my shop offers a unique spin on certain things, and what I do, I do well. I also pride myself on excellent customer service which includes crazy-secure packaging.

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be?
Creative.

Do you have a day job or sell full-time?
Right now I’m all Etsy, all the time. I’ve been a chef for many years and have recently phased myself out of the local restaurant scene… long story!

Based on your answer above, what a current challenge you’re facing?
I’d have to say storage. That’s a boring answer, but so true.

Give us a little glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
First, feed the dogs. If they don’t get breakfast, nothing else happens, I mean NOTHING. Next, I check emails and see what I need to pack up and get shipped, or I may have to touch up something before it goes out. Some days I spend out at thrift stores bringing home way more than I can deal with at one time. Once I get my haul back here, I have to process each item, seeing if it needs any repair, remove any nails, glass, splinters, etc., see if it needs sanding… things like that. That can be time consuming. Other days, I’m organizing frames and such into groups that complement each other and painting all day. I usually try to wind down “work” by dinnertime, about 8pm, but I may still be on the computer after that, listing items to sell.

Share with us a favorite handmade purchase or shop.
I bought this, and it goes everywhere I do.

What would you like to learn to do?
I think I’d like to learn to sew. My grandmother was a very talented seamstress, and I’d like to be even half that good.

What are you listening to right now?
My taste in music is all over the place, but right now I’m listening to Ghost by Zero 7.

This giveaway is now closed.

Here at Gussy Sews we love to look at all things beautiful & handmade. Today is week #39 of my series on Featured Artists, which is a bi-monthly event showcasing fun and sassy handmade shops! I love searching for new wares to show the Gussy community. You can read all back Featured Artist posts by clicking here.

This week’s Featured Artist is Sarah from Tuckoo and MooCow, a shop filled with hand painted miniature art. Be sure & enter the giveaway below!

Please introduce yourself to us.
My name is Sarah-Lambert Cook and I am a full-time artist living in beautiful Asheville, NC making miniature watercolors into jewelry and other accessories. I haven’t been here for very long, though. My husband and I just moved to North Carolina from Atlanta, GA a few weeks ago. I sing wherever I go, skip and dance whenever I feel, read voraciously, watch old movies almost every night, have a passion for history and love to have my hands busy creating something.

What inspires you?
I am so inspired by everything around me that it is hard to pin-point what gets me going the most: good books, movies, nature, music, an interesting conversation—you name it, they pretty much all inspire me. Specifically, I am constantly inspired by my faith, John Donne’s writings, history, literature and folk music.

Share something you absolutely LOVE about your shop/your product.
I love the feeling that I creating something unique. Even if I make ten of the same painting no two will ever look exactly the same. There’s something great about feeling like each person who buys one of my pieces isn’t just buying a piece of jewelry, they’re buying a real conversation piece. Not much can start a good conversation like a work of art, and if you’re wearing the art, well that’s even better!

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be?
Inventive.

Do you have a day job or sell full-time?
I sell full-time.

Based on your answer above, what a current challenge you’re facing?
Managing my time. I’ve had days where I work until 4 am only to sleep for a few hours and get back at it by 8am. It’s not a healthy way to operate and as time has gone by I’ve become much better at working out how to parcel out those 24 short hours in a day so that I am having time for me and my husband while still getting everything done that needs to be.

Give us a little glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
I wake up between 8 and 10 in the morning and start answering e-mails, Etsy convos and generally responding to everything I missed while I was asleep. By mid-afternoon I’ve packaged all items that need to be shipped that day, made a list of whatever I need to work on later in the afternoon and am ready to go to the post office and run other errands. Most painting I do is in the evening. I’m definitely a night owl and am just so much more inspired and ready to paint after dinner.

Share with us a favorite handmade purchase or shop.
There are so many favorite shops, it would be impossible for me to pick only one. My favorite handmade purchase, though, is a print of five women in white dresses from the amazing artist Kristina Havens.

What would you like to learn to do?
I would like to learn how to build my own furniture. I don’t mean simple furniture either (I’ve got that down), I mean create truly awesome hand-crafted furniture. There is something marvelous about relaxing in a well-crafted chair.

What are you listening to right now?
Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons. Isn’t it awesome that indie-folk music is becoming more and more popular? I am loving it!

This giveaway is now closed.

Here at Gussy Sews we love to look at all things beautiful & handmade. Beautiful items that reflect a happy life, love, and a joyful spirit; beautiful items that we can share with others…

Today is week #38 of my series on Featured Artists, which is a bi-monthly event showcasing fun and sassy handmade shops! I love searching for new wares to show the Gussy community. You can read all back Featured Artist posts by clicking here.

♥ This week’s Featured Artist is Kori from Paper & Pigrails, a shop filled with party printables.
Be sure & enter the giveaway below!

***

Please introduce yourself to us… My name is Kori Clark and I live in sunny Florida {Bradenton to be exact} where I share my home with my sweet husband, two excited toddlers, and two large dogs who shed a bit too much. My computer is my heart and I have been using it to illustrate original graphics for over 10 years. Most of my growing years I spent loving the fine arts and then went to college, ready to abandon my dreams of being an artist for a “real” career. It was then that my {OH SO WISE} dad suggested I look into computer graphics instead of abandoning something I loved. It was love at first digital illustration, and I graduated in digital arts. Since that time I have worked corporately and then had the opportunity to stay home and try to make this a full time gig, with freelance work. In spring of 2010 I was introduced to a whole new world of “party designs” and party bloggers and it was a perfect fit! I have watched Paper & Pigtails grow and have many plans for it in the future!

What inspires you? What doesn’t? Artistically, I find myself inspired by food, fashion, and interior design more than anything else. In life and in design, my children both inspire me with the way that they see the world and all of the things that I forgot were cool in it!

Share something you absolutely LOVE about your shop/your product: I love that printable designs can save money, packaging, and help support local businesses. I think one of the coolest things about printable products is that there isn’t any shipping associated with them!! For this reason, I am able to send products around the world without any “packaging” and packaging/shipping expense, and my clients can then have their invitations and paper items printed at their local shop. I have customized my products for everything from birthday parties in Australia to a wedding in Japan, while sitting at home in Florida.

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be? Multi-tasker.

Do you have a day job or sell full-time? I am thrilled to be able to sell full-time.

Based on your answer above, what a current challenge you’re facing? Balancing running a business with two small children at home. Every day there is a challenge and trying to do it all seamlessly can be exhausting.

Give us a little glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
6am – up and at ‘em/coffee/emails/orders
7:30am – kids are up, we get dressed and have breakfast and prepare for the day
7:30am-9am – try to squeeze in a little work while we get ready for the day (check FB/twitter/blog)
9am – drop my older one off at preschool and home to play with the little guy for a bit before putting him down for a nap
11:00am – 2pm designs (different ever day… sometimes marketing/logo design, sometimes party designs, sometimes setting up and photographing new designs)AKA kids nap time
2:00pm – 3:30pm my daughter is home and she has a “rest time” which allows another few emails to be answered while I start dinner
3:30pm – 5:00pm playtime
5:00pm – 7:30pm family time/dinner/bath times/bedtime stories/lullaby’s
8:30pm – 12:00pm or later emails/twitter/Facebook/blog/fill orders, hurry and go to bed!!!

Share with us a favorite handmade purchase or shop. My favorite purchase/shop right now is Bee’s Knees Creative. Renee makes the sweetest cookies and cake pops. She has worked her magic for me several times and is amazing! She makes her own cookie cutters, so she can customize things wonderfully to a vision. Not only are her sweets beautiful, they are super tasty! She recently relocated to a town only an hour away, so I am now anxious to try her cakes, too!

What would you like to learn to do? I am trying to learn more about product photography, I love beautiful photos! I would also LOVE to learn how to sew.

What are you listening to right now? Err… Nick Jr. But if I had my way, it would be replaced with any band with a stand up bass guitar.
